Description:
This workshop is for all types of painters--- whether they paint representational, abstract or nonobjective. It is also for all types of mediums – watercolor, acrylic, gesso, gouache, or mixed media. The emphasis is on searching for personal content, design and composition--- three steps to fabulous painting. Participants will work on composition, explore personal aspects of their painting and work on their design elements and principles. They will have the option to work with different mediums and explore the use of collage. There will be demonstrations, slide talks, assignments, personal and group critiques, and discussions. By the end of the workshop, the painter will have a stronger understanding of composition, design elements and principles. By emphasizing certain elements and principles, and choosing more personal content, paintings will become more unique, recognizable and successful.
ARTIST STATEMENT
I view my work as an ongoing process of search and self-examination. I am interested in the passage of time and what remains. I look for this affect of time on nature and the cycle of life. I also try to explore the effects of time on memory, which can dwell in either light or shadow. Our memories may be filled with gaps, like our childhood memories. Or our memories may be faded or just the traces or vestiges of a remembered moment in our past. My work is an expression of the personal within the universal, and I invite the viewer to bring his or her own piece of history to the meaning of the painting.
With the passage of time, there is a transience depicted with traces and layers. My process in my painting also incorporates traces and layers, in which paint is layered, lifted, scratched and rubbed, leaving a residue of marks much like the themes I am trying to convey.
